Jay Bakker leads faith-based rally opposing NC marriage amendment

The son of televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker Sunday led a rally encouraging North Carolinians to vote against the marriage amendment on the May ballot.

NBC-17, North Carolina, says

Jay Bakker joined other religious leaders and members of the community in a rally at the Trotter Building.

“My parents taught me to love people across the board and always be open to people. They were always into equality and reaching out to the marginalized and things like that,” he said.

Bakker lives in New York working as a pastor and is unable to vote on the state amendment, but said he still felt strongly enough to make a push to voters.

According to the Associated Press

Bakker said though his parents didn’t always bring favorable attention to North Carolina, they taught him that Jesus’ message was to love others.

Bakker grew up near Charlotte watching his parents run the Praise The Lord ministry, which collapsed in scandal the late 1980s. His father went to prison, and his mother remarried and became a television personality who embraced gay men with AIDS. She died in 2007.
