Dr. Phil exposes suspected New Mexico cult

The cult was the subject of an in-depth episode of Wednesday’s Dr. Phil show.

The leader is a man who goes by the name of “Golden Elk,” also known as Clemente Suriano.

Parents of the young adults he’s recruited say he’s brainwashed them.

Concerned moms Iris and Leisa say they have not seen their children in more than a year. Iris’ son, Elon, 26, and Leisa’s daughter, Ashley, 27, have cut off contact with their families in order to live together with Suriano.

The show — or a transcript of Is This a Cult? — is available on DVD.

Experts say an estimated 5000 cults operate in the United States.
