BHANDARA: In a bone-chilling incident, a man allegedly killed his 21-year-old daughter and buried her in front of his house, in full public view.
Reason? He wanted to appease the presiding deity of the sect the family follows. The incident is reported to have taken place on Wednesday in Kudegaon village of Lakhandur taluka.
Neighbours say they heard some commotion in the Tembhurne household and on reaching the spot saw Raibhan Tembhurne burying his eldest daughter Rachana in a pit in front of the house. The family members, including Raibhan, his wife Ratnabai and his three daughters, Rachana, Asmita and Smita, are said to be followers of the Satyug sect. They had been inducted into the sect by one Sharda Naktode, who now lives with them.
The neighbours, who witnessed Raibhan bury Rachna, claim he had done it to appease the presiding deity of his sect. They immediately informed sarpanch Gangadhar Raut, who reported the matter to Lakhandur police. However, even before the police arrived, people started pelting stones at the Tembhurnes, demanding their arrest and exhumation of the body.
By the time the police arrived, the situation had grown so tense that they feared for the lives of the Tembhurnes. The police exhumed the body of the girl, and later arrested Raibhan, Ratnabai Tembhurne, Sharda Naktode and four others, suspected to be accomplices in the crime.
The accused have been taken to the tehsil town of Lakhandur. Further investigation is on.
