IUKA, Miss. — In April, 150 members of Iuka Baptist Church voted to kick Charles Jones off the deacons’ board. The punishment followed weeks of complaints by Mr. Jones and his friends that the pastor was following the teachings of the Rev. Rick Warren, the best-selling author and church-growth guru. After the vote, about 40 other members quit the church to support Mr. Jones. Mr. Warren, the effusive pastor of stadium-sized Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., is best known for his book “The Purpose Driven Life,” which has sold 25 million copies and urges people to follow God’s plan
A Baptist childhood and changing times helped shape Rick Warren’s emerging religious style. Rick Warren stands at a lectern, wearing a blue and white Hawaiian shirt. His feet are jammed, sockless, into blue and red Docksiders. “God designed you to make a difference,” Warren, 52, says to 4,000 upturned faces at Saddleback Church’s main worship center. “You were not put on this planet to take up space.” Behind him, a movie-screen-sized map of the world shines with pinpoints of light. The light over Orange County shines the brightest. One week later, Rick Warren is at the Lake Forest lectern again,

Warren cultivates spiritual ground LAKE FOREST, Calif. — Pastor Rick Warren is on his knees, hands pressed to the floor in front of 3,200 evangelical Christians from 50 countries, head trembling as he cries and calls for a divine embrace: ”Jesus, draw me close.” The congregants pray with Warren, some sobbing, others shaking, many holding out their arms in a supplicant’s gesture toward the Almighty. ”We are starting something that all the forces of hell have not stopped,” Warren says. What Warren has started is a seismic shakeup of the American evangelical movement from the sprawling campus of Saddleback Church,
