Leader of cult-like La Familia gang arrested

Mendez Vargas Mexican authorities have arrested the leader of La Familia, Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargas, and the contend that the cult-like group’s reign in the state of Michoacan has come to an end.

La Familia: Mexican cult-like drug gang says willing to disband

The brutal cult-like cartel that dominates drug production in Mexico’s Michoacan state has made a perplexing call for a truce with the federal government, raising speculation the gang may be losing power.

Early in November, hand-printed banners were strung up in several towns across the western state of Michoacan, including in the state capital Morelia, signed by the cartel known as “La Familia” (The Family), that said the gang would disband if the federal government promised to defend the region from other drug gangs.

“If the government accepts this public commitment and achieves it, La Familia Michoacana will dissolve,” the banners read.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon is battling a handful of powerful cartels across the country and says there will be no negotiations with traffickers.

Update: The supposed leader of a notorious drug gang in México has been captured, authorities said Tuesday.

José Alfredo Landa, 37, who officials say ran a sect of the La Familia, was arrested on Monday along with three other suspects, federal police said.

Violent Mexican gang hijacks U.S. evangelical’s book

In one Mexican drug cartel, mandatory reading now includes an American evangelical’s best-seller, Religion News Service reports.

Drawing from an unlikely source, La Familia Michoacana (the Michoacan Family) bases part of its ideology on the book “Wild at Heart,” by John Eldredge of the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Ransomed Heart Ministries.

Ironically, Eldredge sees the violent gang’s use of his book in a positive light.

“At first, I was really mad that they hijacked my book for their purposes,” he said. “But on second thought … maybe it will touch the hearts of the people who use (it).”

TIME labels drugs gang as ‘Christian Fundamentalists’

Mexico’s newest drug cartel, and certainly the most bizarre, is La Familia Michoacana, a violent but Christian fundamentalist narco-gang based in the torrid Tierra Caliente region of western Michoacan state.

What’s truly bizarre, though, is why TIME doesn’t know when and when not to use the term ‘Christian Fundamentalist.’ Narco-thugs for Jesus (no not that One), Terry Mattingly writes at GetReligion.

Cult-like gang gains power in Mexico drugs war

A cult-like drug cartel is defying President Felipe Calderon in his home state in western Mexico by taking on security forces with a menacing mix of violence, pseudo-religion and gifts for the poor.

“La Familia” (The Family) uses Bible scriptures to inspire its traffickers and has taken over smuggling in the state of Michoacan, gaining power despite Calderon’s near three-year assault on cartels in the state and across the country.
