Woman Jailed Over ‘Miracle Babies’

A woman was yesterday sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for helping register the births of the so-called “miracle babies“.

Mrs Betty Akinyi Nyanya, 49, was convicted by Nairobi Chief Magistrate Wilson Muiruri on her own guilty plea.

Nyanya is a nurse aid at New Gathecha Estate Nursing and Maternity Home in Buruburu Estate Phase 1, which she runs with her husband.

Three of the “miracle babies” were registered at the clinic between December 2001 and May 2004.

Two of the children are alleged to have been born to embattled UK-based preacher Gilbert Deya and his wife, Mary, following miracle prayers by the couple.

Nyanya had been charged with three counts of giving false information for the purpose of registering three babies namely, Elijah Opiyo Deya, Miriam Adongo Deya and Paul Joseph Ochieng.
