LUSAKA: A Zambian priest who scandalised the Vatican by marrying a South Korean in a mass wedding is writing his autobiography, including an account of the short-lived marriage, a Roman Catholic bishop said on Tuesday.
Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo shocked the Catholic Church last year when he broke his vow of celibacy and married acupuncturist Maria Sung in a ceremony organised by Reverend Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church.
Catholic priests are prohibited from marrying.
Milingo lived with Sung for four months in New York before repudiating his marriage and announcing his intention to return to the Catholic fold.
A spokesman for Zambian Catholic bishops, Dennis de Jong, said Milingo was spending his time in prayer at a retreat “after repenting his sin for the scandals caused by his misadventure…and his attempted marriage with Maria Sung.”
“He also spends time writing his autobiography including the episode with Maria Sung. He regrets this episode in his life,” de Jong said.
Sung is in Zambia to plead for government help in reuniting her with her husband. She told reporters last week she believed Milingo was being kept a virtual prisoner by the Vatican, a charge de Jong has denied.
