Police Investigating Fairfield Murder

Police in Fairfield say one man is dead, and another in jail after a stabbing incident on the Maharishi University of Management campus. The campus sits in the small southeast Iowa town of Fairfield. The college is known for its transcendental meditation program as well as promoting peace and freeing the world of problems.

Jefferson County attorneys say they’re spending the day trying to piece together why a Maharishi University of Management student was stabbed to death and now they’re trying to figure out why.

Police tell TV9 they responded to a report of a stabbing at the M.U.M. Dining Hall just after seven Monday night. When they got there, they found 19-year old Levi Butler bleeding from stab wounds from the chest. Butler was taken to Jefferson County Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:30.

Officers arrested 24- year old Shuvender Sem. Sem is currently in the Johnson County Jail and is charged with first-degree murder. In addition to the murder charge, the Jefferson County Attorney told TV9 Shuvender Sem is also charged with aggravated assault for stabbing another student with a pen in the face hours before butler’s murder.

Both men did live on campus and attended the university.

More information should come to light today as authorities are interviewing other witnesses.
