A man who claimed he was a victim of religious brainwashing has been sentenced to 146 years in prison for allegedly raping four women and carjacking two other people in 1999.
Ilyas Abdul-Mumin stared blankly at Franklin County Common Pleas Judge David Fais as he handed down the unusually long prison sentence Friday.
Twenty-five-year-old Abdul-Mumin was an Army private who joined the Nation of Islam after he was shot in the early 1990s.
Abdul-Mumin had pleaded not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. Attorneys said the Nation of Islam taught him to hate white people, and especially white women.
A jury convicted him on February fifth of 35 of the 38 counts against him.
Abdul-Mumin confessed to the crimes in 2002. Police also had DNA evidence in several of the cases.
