Falun Gong barred from New Year fete

Followers of the Falun Gong spiritual group have been barred from joining a parade on the Champs-Elysées to mark Chinese New Year celebrations in Paris, the organization said in a statement on Monday. It said the move came after pressure from the Chinese Embassy.

The Falungong group, which at one point claimed millions of followers in China, has been banned as an “evil cult” by Beijing since 1999. Paris is to mark the Chinese New Year with a show involving 54 floats, 12 giant totems and 7,500 performers who will parade up the Champs-Elysées on Saturday.
