LDS Church Takes Stand in Firing Squad Issue

(Salt Lake City-AP) — The Mormon church doesn’t oppose eliminating the firing squad.

That’s according to an official statement released by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Wednesday.

The Utah Sentencing Commission asked for a statement from the church because it wants to get rid of the the firing squad as a means of execution and the media circus that it creates.

The commission was concerned with the L-D-S Church’s stance because of a historical doctrine that said justice wasn’t done unless a murderer’s blood was shed.

And it wanted to find out how wide spread that belief is.

The commission plans to formally recommend banning the firing squad and adopting lethal injection as the only method of execution.
