At least 20 members of the Falun Gong spiritual group have began a hunger strike to protest what they claim to be Beijing’s extension to Hong Kong of the persecution of their movement.

The hunger strike – in Hong Kong’s financial district – will continue until Wednesday, one day before a local magistrates court is due to pass judgment on 16 local and foreign Falun Gong members.

The practitioners face various charges related to a demonstration in March outside Beijing’s liaison office in Hong Kong.
