The man accused of raping and sexually abusing his wife over nine years says she was a frigid woman who had been raped and abused in a previous marriage.
A 35-year-old Hamilton man yesterday denied six charges of rape, five charges of sexual violation and one charge of assault with intent to commit sexual violation.
He told the court his wife was a very “frigid person who would jump a lot”.
He said she was pregnant when they met after being raped by her previous husband.
An elder from the Jehovah Witness Church, which the man once belonged to with his ex-wife, was forced to give evidence yesterday, telling the court the pair had discussed an “alleged rape”.
Frederick Marriner refused to answer questions about the discussion the pair had in late 1998, but Judge Robert Wolff said if he failed to do so he would be stood down in custody.
Other members of the Church also gave evidence against the man. One woman said he told her, “I’ve done it again, I’ve raped her”.
