Dutch religious broadcaster condenses Bible into 20 minutes of film

Religion News Blog — A Dutch religious broadcaster has condensed the Bible into 20 minutes’ worth of films.

The videos, none of which last more than a minute, are designed to introduce the essence of the Bible to young people in an accessible, funny way that fits in with online culture, says Radio Netherlands.

As can be expected, not everyone is pleased with the project.

The project, referred to as Bible in a Nutshell, was commissioned by inter-church broadcaster IKON, which broadcasts religious programs on behalf of seven Christian denominations in the Netherlands.

On IKON’s website — where you can view the first five movies — the editors explain

The Bible, the book of books, is for many people very important. That is why it is the most read in the world. But yes, if you want to read it you’ll spend quite some time, because the book is rather thick.

There are many good and interesting things in that book, but you have to dig through hundreds of pages to find it.

The editors of IKON thought, “We can do this another way. Therefore we now present Bible Movies. Just a (brief) summary of each book of the Bible in less than a than 1 minute. So you have only spend twenty minutes to get an impression of €‹€‹what’s in that thick Bible.

We’ll include IKON’s coverage of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. It’s Dutch language only, not subtitled. But if you’re familiar with the Bible, see how far into the movie you get before you’re confused…
