Preacher in court over child kidnapping charges

A controversial preacher who claimed to help infertile couples have miracle babies by prayer has appeared in court facing charges of child kidnap.

Gilbert Deya faces extradition if he is found guilty of six allegations of child kidnap between 1999 and 2004 in his native Kenya.

The 54-year-old, dressed smartly in a dark grey suit, striped tie and light grey shirt, appeared for a brief preliminary hearing at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

He was told to return to court on January 31 to fix a date for a full extradition hearing.

Deya, who runs his worldwide ministry from Peckham, was arrested in December by Scotland Yard’s extradition and international assistance unit following a request from the Kenyan authorities.

He was remanded in custody after his first court appearance following his arrest but was released when family members paid the £50,000 bail.
