Greens warn voters about Christian sect

The Greens say Tasmanians should be alarmed by a campaign being waged against the party by a secretive Christian group.

The Greens say the Exclusive Brethren group has been covertly distributing misleading material about the party’s policies.

Two Scottsdale men authorised newspaper advertisements, warning that the Greens’ policies on such things as same-sex marriages risked ruining society.

The ABC has confirmed both men are Exclusive Brethren members, although neither advertisement revealed this.

The strategy mirrored the group’s approach in New Zealand’s election last year, when similar attacks were made on that country’s Greens.

Tasmanian Greens Leader Peg Putt said the Exclusive Brethren’s covert approach is undemocratic.

“This group is currently under investigation by the Australian Electoral Commission and they were found to have breached New Zealand electoral laws,” she said.

Premier Paul Lennon has declined to comment, saying he does not want to give legitimacy to the group.
