Reverend Moon visit Guyana

Unification Church head Rev Sun Myung Moon is due to arrive here today as part of a 100-city international tour for the launching of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF).

Unification Church Pastor Ronald McGarrell told Stabroek News yesterday that Rev. Moon, 86, would touch down this morning and would be the main speaker at a civic reception at the National Cultural Centre planned for later this afternoon.

McGarrell said there were no plans for him to bless any marriages as his visit here is focused on his new peace movement. The reception is slated for 3:30 pm.

This is Moon’s first visit to Guyana.

Two years ago another Unification Church official Rev Chung Hwan Kwak visited Guyana to hold a workshop.

There was a visit by Moon’s daughter a decade ago as well.

Rev Moon is the founder of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, first established as the Unification Church on May 1, 1954, in Seoul, South Korea.

With his wife Hak Ja Han, he is co-leader of the Unification Movement and his followers regard him and his wife as “the true parents of humankind,” and hail him as the Messiah.

The Unification Church practices mass marriages and critics have described the movement as a cult.
