Rare Books of Mormon Stolen

(KSL News) — A thief stole some rare books from the the LDS Institute of Religion on the University of Utah campus.

Police believe the theft happened sometime between October 24th and November 8th. They say the robber took a small safe from the institute office.

The safe held two rare copies of the Book of Mormon. One is the 1840 Nauvoo edition and the other is the 1841 Liverpool edition. Each book is worth about 20-thousand dollars.

Police believe the theif might have been looking for money, not knowing what the safe contained.

Detective Mike McPHarline: “At this point in time we’ve not received any firm information that would point us in any particular direction. But we’re looking in many driections right now. We have a lot of little things that we’re researching.”

Anyone with information should contact the University of Utah police department.
