Arizona charges leader of polygamous group

The missing leader of a polygamous sect that broke away from the Mormon Church has been charged in Arizona with felony child sex abuse.

The Rocky Mountain News reports that the charges against Warren Jeffs involve arranging a marriage between a 16-year-old girl and an older man.

Jeffs is the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints. The group has several thousand members, most of them living in Colorado City, Ariz., and Hildale, Utah, which straddle the Utah-Arizona line.

Authorities in Arizona say that Jeffs has not been seen since January and his whereabouts are unknown.

The sect has bought land in southwestern Colorado and Texas, where it is building compounds.
