Falun Gong demonstrates in Washington

WASHINGTON, July 24 (Kyodo) — Members of the Falun Gong spiritual group staged a large rally Tuesday in Washington to commemorate the third anniversary of its banning by the Chinese government.

About 1,000 people, including members of the U.S. Congress and human rights groups, marched from the Chinese Embassy to the Capital, appealing for an end to China’s crackdown on the sect.

The demonstrators held pictures of assaulted practitioners and wore yellow shirts with three Chinese characters meaning truth, benevolence and forbearance — Falun Gong ideals — displayed.
