A polygamous sect in Bountiful, B.C. under scrutiny for its treatment of women has used its young men and women as a cheap source of labour, according to court documents and a former church member. Dozens of young people – some from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints sect in Bountiful but others from the United States – were sent to Sundre, Alta. to work for a post, timber and logging operation.

The trial of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints former bishop Fredrick Merril Jessop on a charge of conducting an illegal ceremony will be held in Coke County. Jessop was indicted on charges that he conducted a ceremony prohibited by law by marrying an underage girl to Warren Jeffs, the church head of the FLDS in 2006.

There are conflicting reports as to the health status of imprisoned cult leader Warren Jeffs. ABC News yesterday reported that Jeffs is in a coma is may not survive, but the Associated Press says an anonymous sources told them the coma was medically induced and that Jeffs is expected to survive.

Warren Jeffs, the polygamous sect leader and convicted child rapist, is in a coma and may not survive, a source close to Jeffs tells ABC News.Jeffs, 55, had been fasting for the past three days and became so weak that doctors at the Texas prison where he is serving a life sentence induced a coma, according to the source.

In a ruling that could influence the cases of a dozen polygamous men, including their leader, Warren Jeffs, a Texas appeals court on Friday said 2008 searches of the sect’s headquarters were legally justified. In his appeal, Michael Emack claimed the search warrant used to gather the evidence against him was illegally obtained because the raid on the FLDS’ Yearning For Zion ranch was based on a hoax call.

Top cops from Arizona, Nevada and Utah walked out of a meeting in Las Vegas excited about the prospect of banding together with federal authorities for a multistate effort to fight crimes related to polygamy. The meeting in Las Vegas was June 11, 2008. The task force still hasn’t materialized.

Now that cult leader Warren Jeffs has been convicted and sentenced, the fight is heating up for control of the 10-thousand strong FLDS polygamist group. William E. Jessop, who earlier this year claimed he was the rightful president of the group, has sent an open letter to Warren’s full brother, Lyle Jeffs, who is now apparently in command.

Willie Jessop, Jeffs’ former spokesman, said the FLDS community remains in denial but that Jeffs’ conviction could be the “beginning of a crisis.”
