Islamic extremists — hate criminals — have attempted to burn down the house of Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, who sparked controversy by drawing the Prophet Mohammed with the body of a dog. The arson attack comes just days after Vilks was beaten by Muslims while giving a lecture at Uppsala university.

Swedish artist who angered Muslims by depicting the prophet Mohammed as a dog was assaulted Tuesday as furious protesters interrupted his university lecture about the limits of free speech. Vilks has faced numerous threats over his controversial drawing of Mohammed with a dog’s body, but Tuesday’s incident was the first physical assault directed against him.

At least three Swedish newspapers published a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog after an alleged plot to murder the artist who created it was uncovered in Ireland. Dagens Nyheter said in an editorial that “Vilks doesn’t stand alone in this conflict. A threat against him is, in the long term, also a threat against all Swedes.”
