Religion News Briefs: A woman has been jailed for up to 30 years for her part in the murders of two people — one a woman who wanted to leave the cult; the other a 4-year old boy shot by the cult’s leader.
The wife of a cult leader in the Mexican ‘slavery cult’ raided last week has told reporters followers were treated with cruelty, including humiliation and psychological torture.
Cult leader Tony Alamo has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court in the hope it will overturn a ruling in a civil lawsuit against him.
And the Moonies, whose failed ‘Messiah’ recently died, have put on another mass wedding.

Two of seven members of a suspected Durham, NC cult were released from jail Thursday after authorities dropped charges against them. Sheilda Harris and Sheila Moses are the mother and sister of Pete Moses, the leader of the suspected cult who pleaded guilty earlier this week to killing Antoinetta McKoy, 28, and Jadon Higganbothan, 4, in 2010.

The alleged cult leader of the Black Hebrews, who police say killed a woman and a 4-year-old boy in 2011, pleaded guilty Monday morning to two counts of first-degree murder in Durham County Criminal Superior Court. Peter Moses’ plea means he is no longer facing the death penalty.

New search warrants released Tuesday show a second fingerprint belonging to cult leader Peter Moses Jr. was found on clear tape used to wrap plastic around the remains of a 4-year-old boy. Last June Moses was charged in his murder, as was as in the murder of a woman.

Investigators have matched a fingerprint from the graves of a young boy and a woman with the leader of a religious cult who has been charged in their deaths, search warrants issued by the Durham, NC Police Department show. The single fingerprint found on a piece of tape that had been wrapped around plastic bags that encased the body of 5-year-old Jadon Higganbothan has been conclusively identified as belonging to Peter Lucas Moses Jr.

An autopsy report released Tuesday shows 5-year-old Jadon Higganbothan died from a gunshot wound to the head before being wrapped in plastic bags and buried in a shallow grave behind a Durham, N.C. home. Higganbothan was reported missing in February, along with Antoinetta McKoy. Police say they believe they found McKoy’s remains buried behind the same home Wednesday after plumbers called 911.

Now comes news that the body of 5-year-old Jadon Higganbothan, who was last seen in October, has also been located.

Moses, 27, faces numerous charges including one count of second-degree kidnapping, one count of assault by pointing a gun, one count of assault on a female, one count of communicating threats and failure to appear in court on earlier charges.
