FLDS leadership dispute moves closer to court

Utah Division of Corporations officials said in a statement that neither jailed leader Warren S. Jeffs nor challenger William E. Jessop has presented “clear evidence” of a right to head the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ legal entity.

The two men have until Aug. 3 to either both sign a document agreeing on a leader or get a court order determining who is in authority, division officials stated.

Power struggle for control of FLDS cult appears headed for court

As suggested earlier the fight for control of jailed polygamous cult leader Warren Jeffs‘ Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) appears to be headed for court.

But George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley told the Associated Press that the “last thing a judge wants to do in a nation committed to the separation of church and state is to become the arbiter of questions of faith.”

Former Warren Jeffs supporter calls him ‘morally indefensible’

T he man who has been the public voice of the polygamous FLDS sect said Thursday he can no longer stand up for jailed leader Warren S. Jeffs.

“I came to the point where Mr. Jeffs’ conduct was indefensible and have chosen not to defend it publicly or privately,” said Willie R. Jessop.

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided to keep a polygamous sect’s property trust under government control Wednesday, siding, for now, with a state court judge in a heated judicial standoff.

The appellate judges blocked a federal court order that would have temporarily returned control to theFundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for the first time since the state of Utah took over the trust six years ago.

Two brothers of jailed polygamous church leader Warren Jeffs are being sought by Arizona police after allegedly evicting a leadership rival’s wife who refused to renounce her husband, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Ruth Steed, 26, is married to William E. Jessop, who last month sought to take legal control of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from Warren Jeffs. Court records show Steed sought the court protection after her loyalties to the church were challenged and she refused to leave her husband.

The Utah Supreme Court on Tuesday wrestled with the issue of who has the final say over state law as part of a long-running battle for control of a communal land trust tied to Warren Jeffs’ polygamous church. A fight for control of a polygamous sect intensified Thursday as leaders filed documents to keep jailed leader Warren Jeffs in charge of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Boyd L. Knudson, the registered agent of the church’s Corporation of the President, sought to cancel out papers filed Monday seeking to replace Jeffs with church elder William E. Jessop as president and presiding bishop.

A list of additional crimes prosecutors may use against cult leader Warren Jeffs was entered in a Texas court under seal Wednesday, along with the witness list for Jeffs’ sexual assault and bigamy trial.
