Warren Jeffs Utah Division of Corporations officials said in a statement that neither jailed leader Warren S. Jeffs nor challenger William E. Jessop has presented “clear evidence” of a right to head the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ legal entity.

The two men have until Aug. 3 to either both sign a document agreeing on a leader or get a court order determining who is in authority, division officials stated.

But George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley told the Associated Press that the “last thing a judge wants to do in a nation committed to the separation of church and state is to become the arbiter of questions of faith.”

United Effort Plan The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided to keep a polygamous sect’s property trust under government control Wednesday, siding, for now, with a state court judge in a heated judicial standoff.

The appellate judges blocked a federal court order that would have temporarily returned control to theFundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for the first time since the state of Utah took over the trust six years ago.

Warren Jeffs Two brothers of jailed polygamous church leader Warren Jeffs are being sought by Arizona police after allegedly evicting a leadership rival’s wife who refused to renounce her husband, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Ruth Steed, 26, is married to William E. Jessop, who last month sought to take legal control of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from Warren Jeffs. Court records show Steed sought the court protection after her loyalties to the church were challenged and she refused to leave her husband.

Utah Supreme Court The Utah Supreme Court on Tuesday wrestled with the issue of who has the final say over state law as part of a long-running battle for control of a communal land trust tied to Warren Jeffs’ polygamous church. The question comes on the heels of a February federal court ruling, which found that the state of Utah violated the religious rights of members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when it took over the church’s land trust in 2005.

In a rare move, 3rd District Judge Denise Lindberg on Monday ordered the court-appointed trust administrator not to comply with a federal court order giving the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints temporary control of the trust.

While in jail awaiting trial on sexual assault and bigamy charges Jeffs recently re-assumed control of the sect’s presidency. Last week an ousted leader filed a challenge to Jeffs’ leadership, leading to a tug-of-war with the cult leader’s loyalists.

Boyd L. Knudson, the registered agent of the church’s Corporation of the President, sought to cancel out papers filed Monday seeking to replace Jeffs with church elder William E. Jessop as president and presiding bishop.

At a hearing Wednesday the court set dates for the final pretrial, deadlines for submitting motions, and sustained the trial dates of July 25 for the count of sexual assault of a child and Oct. 3 for felony bigamy.
