According to outside observers, there has been a flurry of church meetings almost daily, a set of mysterious construction projects and widespread re-baptism as thousands of followers react to apparent prophesies of doom from their imprisoned leader.

The controversial Agape Ministries Church is “not a doomsday cult” and any claims to the contrary are “a load of rubbish”, a criminal lawyer says. Former members and opponents of Agape Ministries say it is a cult led by Pastor Rocco “Brother Roc” Leo who is currently being sought by police.

Police have seized an arsenal of weapons, high-powered ammunition and explosives from South Australian properties linked to a doomsday cult. About 90 police have been involved in searches over the past two days of 12 properties owned by a religious sect known as the Agape Ministries of God, which believes the world is approaching the end.

Lawyers for the Japanese doomsday cult leader on death row for ordering a deadly nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995 have requested a retrial, a court official said Tuesday. The petition was based on what Asahara’s lawyers considered new evidence from testimony by a senior member of the cult that the attacks had been carried out against their leader’s wishes.

The books were found to carry extremist ideas aimed at inciting hatred towards other religions and nationalities.
