Evangelist Juanita Bynum, in the midst of a divorce that became very public when she was allegedly beaten, choked and stomped by her estranged husband in the parking lot of an Atlanta hotel, said Wednesday that her heart is healing.

Conservative critics among the evangelical clergy have accused Juanit Bynum of exploiting the attack for publicity, calling her “loud,” “angry,” “aggressive” and “out of control,” while a group of black and Hispanic churches has demanded Thomas Weeks’s resignation.

The high-profile case involving Bynum and her husband, Bishop Thomas W. Weeks, experts say, underscores that domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence, is no respecter of gender, social-economic status or even religious faith.

Televangelist Juanita Bynum’s husband said Friday he and his wife spent the night together the day before she says he beat her, and it had boosted his hopes for reconciliation.

The Rev. Thomas W. Weeks III had held out hope that he and Bynum could reconcile even after she filed a petition for divorce Monday, but now “has come to the personal resolve, that if Juanita is insistent on a divorce, he will not stand in the way,” his attorneys said in a statement.

Randy Kessler, one of the attorneys representing Thomas W. Weeks III, said they are considering whether the counterclaim will accuse Juanita Bynum of cruel treatment, the charge her divorce petition levels at Weeks.

The divorce of national evangelist Juanita Bynum is moving north to Gwinnett County. Attorneys in the Bynum-Thomas W. Weeks divorce agreed Tuesday to dismiss the filing in Ware County and move the case to Gwinnett County Superior Court, according to Randy Kessler, who is representing Weeks in the matter. The re-filing of the divorce petition could come with some surprises, however.

The divorce filing states that the marriage has been “irretrievably broken,” said Bynum’s attorney Karla Walker of Valdosta.

Lawyers for Thomas W. Weeks III said Monday they have been formally notified that national evangelist Juanita Bynum has filed for divorce.

National evangelist Juanita Bynum apparently has filed for divorce, more than two weeks after the alleged attack by her estranged husband, Bishop Thomas Weeks III.

“If that is not possible, he is committed to working things out amicably and will only litigate as a very last resort,” Weeks’ attorney said in the statement.

Bynum said she gave her attorney the go-ahead for divorce proceedings last week. She said she thought the routine blow-ups in their near five year marriage were normal.
