Former pastor Royden Wood has been convicted by a jury of three of five counts of sexual assault for long-term and intrusive relationships with female congregants.

In 2008 he was also convicted on nine assault charges involving boys and three sexual assault charges involving two women in his now-defunct church.

In April, 2008, Royden Wood — the former senior pastor of the now-defunct Ambassador Baptist Church in London, Ontario — was convicted of beating three boys who attended the church’s alternative school in the 1980s and grabbing the breasts of two church members.

Sentenced to one year in jail and three years’ probation, Wood faces six more sexual assault charges.

The London (Ontario) man announced at a news conference Tuesday he has launched a $1.5-million lawsuit against Wood and the defunct Ambassador Baptist Church.

Superior Court Justice Lynda Templeton ruled yesterday former pastor Royden Wood was guilty of 12 of 13 charges. They included nine involving physical assaults on three boys, members of the conservative church’s alternative school from 1985 to 1987, and three sex-related charges involving two female congregants.

Lawsuits — not assaults and sex crimes — are at the core of his criminal charges, the former senior pastor of a defunct Baptist church says.

Royden Wood, 57, the former pastor of the now-defunct Ambassador Baptist Church, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of breaching his bail conditions.

“I was not pleased that there were no spousal limitations set,” the woman said, adding there were no restrictions on other women kissing her husband on the mouth or sitting on his lap or holding hands.

Superior Court Justice Lynda Templeton heard from the woman who testified to a range of activities at the church while she was a long-term member.

When they attended other churches, one said, it was “nice to have someone not come up and undo your bra or comment on your breast size.”

It was not the “affection program” former Ambassador Church member Richard Leblanc had envisioned when his church leader described it. At the front of the church, under the pulpit, his revered pastor, Roy Wood was entangled in a 20-minute embrace with a female member, his waist thrust forward into hers and her arms around his neck.

Royden Wood has pleaded not guilty to 13 charges. Ten of them are for assault and assault with a weapon in connection with his conduct involving three boys who were pupils at the church’s alternative school between 1985 and 1987. The other three — two for sexual assault and one for sexual exploitation — involve female complainants.

The man was describing what he, his older brother and another friend called “the basement treatment,” the most excessive of a wide array of physical assaults they said they endured as Wood’s students at the Ambassador Baptist Church’s alternative school between 1985 and 1987.

The trial for a teacher accused of bizarre abuse at a defunct Baptist school began this week amid allegations of students standing at attention for hours on end, having facial hair plucked with pliers and a greeting that involved fondling the breasts of parishioners.
