A tug-of-war is developing over Camp David, the multimillion- dollar property of a cult on prime wine-growing land near Waipara, North Canterbury.
Former members of the Full Gospel Mission Fellowship, who poured millions of dollars into the sect, want the assets sold and the money distributed to charity, but a handful of members who still live at the camp or run businesses from it want to keep it.
The foundations of the fellowship crumbled after revelations in early 1996 about the secret life of its late founder, Douglas Metcalf.

The sect’s headquarters became ghost-like after the revelations about Dr Metcalf, compared with the heady days of the late 1970s and early 1980s when about 80 members lived on the property and the sect numbered about 250 people.
A few members remained to attend to the day-to-day running of Camp David and their businesses. Former member Marie Squires said yesterday they were welcome to stay, but it was known that “somewhere down the track” the camp would be sold.
