Yoga guru to celebrities arrested in domestic violence case
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Yoga guru to the rich and famous Jules Paxton faces charges stemming from an alleged assault in which he says he was the one assaulted.
Paxton, 39, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of third-degree assault and criminal mischief after his girlfriend told police he picked her up by the neck, threw her to the floor and choked her.
The two had been arguing for several hours over a pornographic tape and Paxton’s efforts to arrange a three-way sexual encounter, according to a police report.
”The allegations have no basis in fact and he will plead not guilty and we expect him to be completely exonerated,” said Pip Porter, Paxton’s Aspen-based attorney. ”He feels his reputation has been harmed and he’s really upset about that.”
Paxton told police he was the one verbally and physically assaulted and had dialed 911 to report his alleged assault but hung up. Police found a record of the phone call at their dispatch center.
Paxton often accompanies Denise Rich, the songwriter and ex-wife of Marc Rich, the financier pardoned by Bill Clinton before he left the presidency, as she travels to her homes across the country. Sting and Annie Lennox are also listed among his clients.
The alleged victim also told police about an unreported assault that she said happened at Rich’s Aspen home over the Thanksgiving weekend. The woman said Paxton picked her up by the throat and threw her to the ground. She said she hit her head on a brick fireplace.
When she asked to be taken to a hospital, Paxton allegedly refused, fearing he might lose his clients, then locked her in a room at Rich’s house for three days, according to the woman, whose name was blacked out of a police report.
No charges have been filed in the Thanksgiving weekend incident, prosecutor Gail Nichols said.
Porter said the Thanksgiving weekend allegations were false.
”He (Paxton) deeply regrets any pain or embarrassment that may have been caused to Ms. Rich,” Porter said.
