NEWPORT NEWS — A how-to book for vampires. Another book titled “The Satanic Rituals, A Companion to the Satanic Bible.” Two leather masks. Three thongs. An opened box of sterile scalpel blades.

Six days after finding a 13-year-old Northampton County runaway in Charles Matthew Blair’s Newport News home on New Year’s Day, police seized more than 42 items from his home - ranging from occult books to leather sex toys - according to court documents filed Monday.

Blair, 21, is charged with three felony counts of indecent liberties with a child under 14 years old and will face a judge in a preliminary hearing on March 11.

The senior airman was assigned to Langley Air Force Base four months ago after serving at RAF-Lakenheath in England for about two years, said Capt. Jeff Glenn.

Glenn said the Air Force will work with local officials investigating the case.

According to court records, Blair, who used the screen name “princedark,” met the 13-year-old girl in an Internet chat room. They talked about bondage, blood and other sexual acts, and he asked her to run away for a few days, the records said. On New Year’s Day, police found the girl in Blair’s home on Madison Avenue in Newport News, hiding in a bedroom closet. While in his home, police said, they also noticed handcuffs and various items used for bondage.

The girl was returned to her home. Blair was charged in Northampton County, where officials said he picked her up. Newport News police said Monday they are still investigating Blair.

The search of Blair’s Madison Avenue home uncovered a metal rod whip, a vinyl male thong, women’s underwear, pornographic tapes, and a black T-shirt with a satanic symbol, according to court documents filed Monday in Newport News Circuit Court.

Police also seized a computer, compact videocassette tapes, 27 photographs, leg shackles with keys and a Scooby-Doo address book.

They also found a book called “The Vampire Bible.” According to the Web site vampiretemple.com (http://vampiretemple.com), the book contains teachings for the authentic practice of vampirism, a belief in vampires and practices related to them.

This is not the first time such practices have surfaced in the area.

In 1997, a Virginia Beach man was sentenced to 26 years in prison for sexually molesting eight girls, ages 13 to 16, who he recruited for his vampire “family.”

During the trial, the girls testified that Jon C. Bush told them about a role-playing game where they assumed the roles of ancient vampires. The girls said that Bush told them they could become vampires by having sexual intercourse with him or by letting him bite them.
