Cult Leader Found Dead in Concrete-Sealed Room
Yongin, South Korea, 14 December: Police found the remains of a religious cult leader on Tuesday [14 December] while acting on tips that his followers put him in a room and sealed it with concrete in an attempt to allow him to experience immortality and resurrection.
Only skeletal remains of the cult leader, identified as Song, 54, were laid on a bed in the basement room of a building in Yongin, about 50 km south of Seoul, when police destroyed the seal and entered the room.
About 150 police were mobilized for the operation, which began around 1 p.m. [local time]. Police said Song is thought to have starved to death.
Four suspects were taken into custody for questioning, including the cult’s current leader, identified as Lee, 56, police said. They are suspected of having carried out the experiment in 1999, police said.
