Tom Hanks cracks Da Vinci Code
Tom Hanks has beaten off stiff competition to win the coveted lead role in a film version of the biggest-selling adult fiction novel ever, The Da Vinci Code.
Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and George Clooney were all pipped to the post by Oscar-winning Hanks, who will play the heroic Harvard professor Robert Langdon, in the movie adaptation of Dan Brown’s cult thriller.
And now the race is on to star opposite Hanks as French cryptologist Sophie Neveu, who assists Langdon when he is called in to help solve the murder of a top curator at Parisian art gallery The Louvre.
If director Ron Howard has his way, he won’t look further than France to find his leading lady, with Amelie actress Audrey Tatou, The Beach beauty Virginie Ledoyen and Peter Pan’s Tinkerbell, Ludivine Sagnier, all in contention for the role.
However Hollywood bosses are reportedly pushing for a better-known actress to play Sophie and Underworld star Kate Beckinsale has also been tipped for the role.
The contentious novel, which centres round the conspiracy to hide the ‘truth’ about Jesus Christ’s relationship with Mary Magdelene, sparked outrage when first published last year, but still sold a staggering 7 million copies.
Filming is set to start in Paris in Spring and then move to London and Scotland.
