The enemy within
More articles on this topic: Hate GroupsLast week, residents of Werling Drive, between Fairfax and Pettit avenues, received some disturbing free literature on their lawns: pamphlets espousing the need to rid America of Jewish and non-Aryan values and customs.
The leaflets encouraged readers to join the National Alliance. It is a white separatist group that states on its Web site that “white people are unconscious of the threats to our race’s survival.”
This country’s internal enemies gather in the shadows as Americans find themselves preoccupied on foreign terrorists. We don’t pay much attention to the Ku Klux Klan, skinheads and Aryanism.
Their rhetoric is far out on the fringes of reality, with absurd observations about God’s will, “mud races” and the Holocaust. While the Bill of Rights protects the speech, these people are anathema to the American way.
And yet, hate groups are on the rise, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
In 2003, the number of skinhead and Klan groups rose 6 percent, the center reports. The number of Web sites grew by 12 percent. The Aryan Nation doubled its chapter growth to 22. That is what’s traceable.
Why don’t we fear such growth? Perhaps the horror of 9/11 obscured the revulsion of April 19, 1995, the day Timothy McVeigh detonated a truck bomb in front of a federal building in Oklahoma City. The blast killed 168 men, women and children.
We forget that McVeigh was a white supremacist, born, raised and trained in this country. His fear and hatred partially sparked by the work of William Luther Pierce, a former college physics professor who wrote the infamous race-war novel “The Turner Diaries.” Pierce, who died in 2002, penned the equally repellant “Hunter,” where the vigilante protagonist kills interracial couples. Pierce founded the National Alliance.
On the National Alliance’s Web site, one member, an earnest looking blond mother from Hope, Mich., tells readers she joined because she wants her children to grow up in a “clean, healthy, White world, where they won’t be a minority.”
“I want them to go to White schools and live in a White community.”
What sane mother doesn’t want her children to grow up in a clean and healthy world? Remove those two ideas from this misguided woman’s ramble and one wonders what white values are? Are these different values from those of blacks, Hispanics and Asians?
Or does pigmentation blind some people so that they cling to outrageous and irrational perspectives about another’s motivations?
