Apostolic Sect Members Take Children for Immunisation

MEMBERS of the Jahane Marange Apostolic Church in Lower Guruve, known for resisting medical treatment, responded positively to the just-ended national measles immunisation and Vitamin A supplementation programme.
However, the church members preferred the immunisation to be done under the cover of darkness and without the knowledge of the church leaders. The district medical officer for Guruve, Dr Hillary Chiguvare, said although there were small pockets of resistance in the district, the major cluster of the Vapositori found in Musengezi ward in the Zambezi Valley had been forthcoming but preferred to do it secretly.
In the past, the church members would run away on the sight of health officials and spend days hiding in bushes and mountains.
This time, some of the members had gone to the extent of asking health officials to visit them in their homes as they felt uncomfortable to be seen walking into a health centre.
They also said that they did not mind their children getting the vaccination because they would take them for cleansing ceremonies soon after.
“What we ended up doing was to set up an immunisation centre just next to their prayer site. This proved very convenient as the children got the jab on the way to church,” said Dr Chiguvare.
