The Metropolitan Police Department on Thursday arrested nine members of the Aum Supreme Truth cult on suspicion of selling a medical product containing steroids without official permission.

The police searched 23 sites related to the cult, including its center in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, on suspicion of violating the Medicine Law.

The cult’s members sold Chinese steroid cream to at least 6,000 people last year, making about 46 million yen, the MPD said.

The department believes part of the profits were used to finance the doomsday cult.

The head of Aum’s Tokyo center, Takashi Inoue, 35, of Suginami Ward, and eight others were arrested on suspicion of selling 63 containers of Togen cream to 12 people, including a woman in Kyoto, without permission, earning 504,000 yen from March last year through April. Permission from the Tokyo governor is required to sell medical products containing certain substances.
