Slain man was not cult member, says family
Like many parents in Subukia constituency, Nakuru, Patrick Wanyeki Thimbara’s mother had no idea that her son was a member of the outlawed sect.
In a recent interview, Mrs Mercy Karongari said her son who was brutally murdered after he allegedly deserted the movement, never showed any signs of being a Mungiki adherent.
” He was always himself. He never chanted or sung the Mungiki slogans as is common with most followers.
” The only thing that would have associated him with the outlawed sect was his long hair,” she said at home in Maili Tisa.
Karongari who declined to be photographed said her son was hardworking and obedient.” I’m surprised that he was linked to a gang of murderers that claim to be propagating the old Agikuyu cultures,” she said. The late Wanyeki
The mother of 13 told us that before he met his death, Wanyeki was twice attacked by people he could not identify.
” The first attack was a month or two before he met his death. He was attacked outside as he was about to enter the house,” said the mother.
In the second attack, only weeks before he was found dead in his house, she said Wanyeki suffered a serious fracture on his left hand.
” The second attack was so bad and I was forced to tell him to come back home and live near me,” said Karongari.
” All along I never thought that his assailants were actually members of the outlawed Mungiki sect,” she said.
Wanyeki, who traded in potatoes, was known to his parent as an innocent young man who would not harm anyone or associate with a gang.
He was born in September 1981 and had bought a piece of land and constructed a temporary house with money he saved at a local co-operative society.
His mother claimed that at the time of his death, he had saved up to Sh25,000 from his potato business and had plans to start another business.
She confessed that two days before Wanyeki met his death, he had shaved his long hair and kept to himself.
” He never expressed any fears or told us about threats on his life. Infact on the last Sunday before his death, he took super at home and left. We never saw him alive again,” said Karongari.
His father, Maina Thumbara, also does not believe that Wanyeki was a member of the outlawed sect.
” He never told anyone about Mungiki or being a member. We only learnt of his association with the sect when he died,” said Thumbara, an employee of Jomo Kenyatta High School.
Thumbara believes that his son was murdered by thugs and the connection with Mungiki is misleading.
