Leader Efraim Society arrested
Dordrecht – Heinrich van Geene, spiritual leader of the controversial Efraim Society, was arrested by police yesterday say two ex-members. Last year, they filed a complaint against Van Geene for fraud and abuse.
Van Geene, who has been questioned by police several times, is said to be in custody at the police office of Oud-Beijerland.
Police and the District Attorney’s office declined to confirm the arrest.
Elisabeth van de Berg of Venhuizen, and Sjaak Pieterson of Nieuwkoop – both ex-followers of Van Geene – say detectives in Oud-Beijerland yesterday alerted them to the spiritual leader’s arrest.
Van den Berg and Pietersen have filed a damage claim at the court in Dordrecht against Van Geene. They also have filed a complaint for libel, as Van Geene is said to have posted insults at his website regarding the apostates.
Pietersen says that the sect leader, who calls himself the prophet Elijah, has taken 32.000 Euros from him. This was the profit from the sale of his florist business and house. As soon as Van Geene had the money, Pietersen is said to have been driven from the sect.
Van den Berg accuses Van Geene that he caused her to stop taking her medicines for breast cancer. He also is said to have told her that she should not allow surgery, because the woman was said to have been chosen as a ‘bride’ about to be received into heaven. ‘God only wants complete people,’ Van Geene is said to have preached.
