Beaten Bible study student settles for $1.5 million
An Austin church has settled a lawsuit over the severe beating of a Bible study student who had misbehaved during a summer class.
The Austin American-Statesman reported the family of the boy will receive more than $1.5 million from the Capitol City Baptist Church. Also paying into the settlement is the church pastor, his twin brother and other church members.
The boy’s family initially had sued for $25 million.
The boy testified he was beaten with tree branches in July of 2002. The beating left the 11-year-old hospitalized under intensive care for five days.
In December, church pastor Joshua Thompson and twin brother Caleb Thompson were sentenced to prison for the beating. Joshua Thompson will become eligible for parole after serving 13 years, while his brother becomes eligible after serving seven years.
