Fraud Squad Studies ‘Missing Millions’ Report
A report into the Victory Christian Centre‘s missing millions will be made public soon, the charity watchdog said today.
The Metropolitan Police Fraud Squad is studying the Charity Commission findings.
The evangelical church where worshipers paid 10% of their wages over by direct debit, was run by Pastor Douglas Goodman and his wife Erica.
It was closed down in December 2002 by the Charity Commission after it was found to be £200,000 in the red after reportedly making £7 million.
A spokeswoman for the Commission said: “We opened an investigation into the charity in May 2002 due to complaints about the misappropriation of funds and personal benefits to Pastor Goodman and his wife.
“We also investigated concerns that, despite resigning as trustees in 1999, the pastor and his wife exerted a dominant influence over the trustee body.
“Our investigators identified significant and inappropriate personal benefits to the pastor and his family, as well as a number of trustees.
“We found the trustees were not in control of the charity and were not fully aware of expenditure, which was not properly accounted for.”
The Receiver had not been able to find any assets for the church.
The Goodmans had been paid, without Commission authority, as employees.
The spokesman added: “Pastor Goodman and his family have received substantial sums of money from the charity – significant wages, bonuses, payments to Douglas Goodman Ministries, hotel and travel expenses.”
