AM urged to visit ‘cult slur’ charity

An organisation that received £180,000 in public funds has invited AM Elin Jones to visit after she called for an investigation into the grant.

The Template Foundation at Waunifor, near Llandysul, says itwas disturbed by being branded a “cult” and wants to demonstrate its work as a registered charity.

“We are not a secretive cult at all and it has taken us a lot of work to secure this money,” said one of the managers, Diane Cook.

The group was formerly known as the Emin and was founded by former encyclopaedia salesman Raymond Armin who claimed to have discovered “The Eminent Way”.

But volunteers say they havenothing to hide and the centre is used by a wide range of people for events like artistic courses, team-building, music concerts, pantomimes and stress relief.

“If people get a whiff of anything, they pick up on it and rumours fly around and around,” said Ms Cook.

“But it is not only rubbish, it is old rubbish. We have been here five years and in the whole time the organisation has been registered as a charity we have not had one complaint to the Charity Commission.

“I would like to mention that although we have our spiritual beliefs, I think there is nothing wrong with that.

“We do not hit guests on the head with doctrine. Anyone is welcome here regardless of religion, creed or nationality.

“Most organisations do not have to make that sort of disclaimer. We are simply a public charity and the whole fuss has been quite bizarre.”

Controversy erupted three weeks ago when local AM Elin Jones called for an investigation into the recent public funding.

Ceredigion AM Ms Jones said, “I am baffled as to how such an organisation is intended to contribute to the GDP growth of Wales.

“Scores of businesses tell me how difficult it is to receive Objective One or any public support.”

But Ms Cook said the process had been difficult for the Template Foundation too. “You would not stick with the application for Objective One money unless you had a genuine cause for it – the process is incredibly thorough.”
