Armenian party calls for ban on Jehovah’s Witnesses
Excerpt from report by Armenian news agency Arminfo
The whole nation should jointly fight against the Jehovah’s Witnesses religious sect which is destroying Armenia’s national ideology. This was announced at a news conference in Yerevan today by the leader of the (?Mek Azg) party, Gor Tamazyan.
Citing official data, he said that there are about 20,000 representatives of this sect in Armenia. However according to unofficial figures, there are more than 70,000. Armenia ranks second in the CIS in terms of the number of the registered members of the sect. He said that the sect’s activities sect and persistent propaganda have a negative impact on the spirituality and psyche of the followers.
The state agencies and the Armenian Apostolic Church are passive when it comes to banning this or that sect in the country. Because of that distorted spiritual notions and national values are being imposed on us. The leader of the party said that on behalf of his party and the Armenian nationalist front he appeals to the public at large and representatives of the authorities to join efforts and to protect the country through legislation from “false” spiritual values and sectarianism.
[Passage omitted: the party to hold march on 18 April]
