Villagers kill two, arrest 10 suspected cultists
No fewer than ten secret cult members have been arrested in different locations over the killing of innocent persons, with several others critically hospitalised in the health centres of Bendege-Ekiem in Etung local government area of Cross River State.
DAILY TIMES investigation revealed that the casualties were victims of severe attack by the cultists simply identified as K.K. and Klans who had for long been providing the community.
In an apparent raid conducted by concerned youths and vigilante group in the are against the cultists over the weekend, two persons (names withheld) died on the spot while six other members of the community sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
DAILY TIMES further gathered from an authoritative Police source in the area that over 60 per cent of youths in the area were involved in cult activities.
The police source also lamented the alarming rate of the social vice, pointing out that “the police had been trying our best to curtail the voce but to no avail as the cult members increase each day, using dangerous weapons in their operation and harassing innocent people.”
However, the youths central leader in charge of the area, Amba Bitty Bissong disclosed that “based on our recent leadership inauguration, we vowed to checkmate the menace in line with the blessing of our elders community leaders and religious group, they have been quite cooperative beside security agents and we have therefore recorded success.”
The youths leader maintained that “as a result of the joint effort which has yielded good fruits, some arrests and detention of the cultists were recorded, despite the confrontation and wounds the youths council sustained in the process.”
Mr. Amba Bitty Bissong noted further that in the cause of trying to identify the alleged cult members within their family circles for questioning and interrogation most relatives of the suspects resorted in violence, by claiming the defend their subjects thereby compounding the trend.
He therefore implored all tiers of government to urgently address the issue with a combined team of intensify security network in order to also help to control the scourge and unnecessary danger on the forthcoming council polls. Police, others on sighting the anti-squad had to fled the area while efforts are on top gear to convey the suspected cultists to Calabar the state capital, for interrogation and to face the wrath of law.
Meanwhile, people in the Bendege-Ekiem community who barred their minds to our correspondent, however expressed satisfaction with the successful battle they simply referred to as war, adding “we now sigh of relief over the relative peace among people of our community particularly the girls and opinion leader who now move freely especially an evening without molestation.
