Police arrest leader of banned Mungiki sect

Mungiki sect National Coordinator Ndura Waruinge has been arrested.

The sect leader was picked up by detectives on Friday and taken to Central Police Station in Nairobi for interrogation.

A senior police source said Ndura had recorded a lengthy statement and police were looking for more members of the unregistered sect who organized and participated in the illegal demonstration in support of President Moi’s choice of Uhuru Kenyatta as his successor on Tuesday in Nairobi which was not stopped by the police.

The arrest comes barely two days after the Attorney-General, Amos Wako, issued a terse statement ordering police and other law-enforcement agents to arrest those who organized and participated in the demonstration.
