Mungiki boss now converts to Christianity
The controversial leader of the proscribed Mungiki sect, Ndura Waruinge, yesterday turned to God in salvation at a Nairobi evangelism centre.
And immediately after “seeing the light,” Mr Waruinge, whose name has almost become synonymous with violence, said his first mission was to “fish” his former Mungiki leutenants and adherents.
The hitherto Secretary General of the Mungiki movement, declared that he was a born again Christian at the Neno Evangelism Centre in Ngara.
Mr Waruinge who has been on the war path with the Government over the activities of the sect surprised the congregation when he rose on his feet to surrender his life to the Lord in salvation. The sermon was delivered by Rev. J.M. Ng’ang’a.
Addressing the congregation after becoming turning to Christ, Mr Waruinge sought forgiveness from God for all the evils that he has committed against the society.
He pledged to remain steadfast in the Lord despite temptations that might come his way.
Mr Waruinge went underground early this year after the Government banned the Mungiki sect and other groups perceived to be security threats in the country.
The Government had extended amnesty to followers of the illegal group to surrender to the police but Waruinge instead chose to go underground.
The sect came under fierce attack from members of the public over its alleged atrocious activities including last year’s blood bath in the sprawling slums of Kariobangi North that left more than 23 residents dead.
In September, the group that has been carrying out its activities in hiding resurfaced at a political rally in Limuru attended by Subukia MP Koigi Wamwere sparking fresh fears of its existence.
