ST. THOMAS, Ont. (CP) – Although Canadians cherish their Charter right of freedom of religion, members of a church that condones corporal punishment should not be allowed to beat their children in the name of God, a lawyer told court Thursday.
“Any belief that puts the health and safety of children at risk from an objective point of view, should not be sanctioned by the state,” said Alfred Mamo, who represents Family and Children’s Services of St. Thomas-Elgin.
“It should not be a defence or an excuse for someone to say, ‘Yes, I do beat my children, but I do it in the name of the Church of God.’
“Children ought not to be beaten in the name of God, the devil or anybody else.”
Mamo is the last of four lawyers to make submissions on what evidence should be submitted in the family-court proceedings for seven children taken from their home a year ago.
The children’s services agency has asked the court to rule that the children are in need of further protection.
Mamo argued that members of the Church of God should not be allowed to hit their kids with belts and electrical cords – as the parents have admitted to doing – if other Canadians are punished for the same offence.
