Eastern art of healing to be used on horses
The Japanese healing art of Reiki is being used on horses by a Carmarthenshire breeder and trainer.
Joan Hunter, from Ponthenri near Llanelli, is in demand from animal lovers after qualifying as a Reiki Master.
Joan, aged 52, who moved to Ponthenri from Hertfordshire three years ago, has spent the past two years achieving her qualifications.
She said, “Reiki treatments can help with stress-related problems, lack of confidence, nervousness and panic attacks as well as with physical ailments.
“My specialist subject is horses. I have worked with them all my life and have completed a specialist Reiki for horses training course.”
She said the same kind of things that affect humans also affect horses and other animals.
“Horses see man as a predator and that is why people have trouble with them,” she said.
“You have to learn to be a partner and understand the thought processes. Love, language and leadership are the basic ingredients.”
Joan said some people are sceptical about using Reiki, particularly on horses, but insisted that if people understood their horse properly there shouldn’t be any problems – particularly those animals involved in stressful situations, such as competition, travelling and those recently bought in from sales.
“Nine times out of ten it is not the horse that has the problem, it is the owner who does not understand the horse’s needs,” she said.
“Reiki can help with behavioural problems, bonding, physical and mental ailments, and attitude problems.”
She said when using Reiki, which is very much hands on, Joan hones in on ‘energy centres’ of the horse’s body, which are known as Chakras.
“The Chakras draw energy and light into our beings and often become blocked, therefore unable to draw in the energy that is required to keep us in balance,” she said.
“These blockages arise from disharmony in our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual state.
“Reiki healing helps to release these ‘blockages’ and open the Chakras to the energy source available.”
Different methods are used for other conditions such as broken skin, disease and lameness.
