“Cargo cult” springs up around Solomons rebel Keke
Reports are emerging that a “cargo cult” has sprung up on the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal among followers of Harold Keke [rebel leader on remand on charges of murder and other offences].
The followers expect that their leader, Keke himself, will be found innocent and that he will return with 100,000 dollars for each of the families still supporting him. The reports say that Keke has had some church pastors and women prophets supporting him.
One requirement is that while followers wait for the return of Keke, there can be no smoking or betel nut chewing, or else the 100,000 dollars will not be forthcoming.
It is not immediately clear if the presence of Keke’s followers awaiting his return is contributing to the slow return of other refugees back to their area.
