Belgian euthanasia numbers could be triple

BRUSSELS – Belgium could be carrying out many more euthanasia procedures than officially recorded, it was claimed Tuesday.

Although a total of 170 cases of euthanasia have been recorded in Belgium since last year, the Belgian Medical Journal claimed there have been two to three times this number of procedures carried out.

Since 23 September 2002, the date when the country’s euthanasia law came into force, several hundred more cases of euthanasia could have occurred without being reported to the euthanasia control commission, the journal claimed.

Wim Distelmans, president of the euthanasia control commission, has said that the law had been successful, albeit certain administrative reporting procedures could be improved.

He also said that clause in the law stipulating that two doctors be present at the time of a procedure would be revised.
