The Door’s take on Scientology

ReligionNewsBlog.com • Saturday August 10, 2002

The current issue of The Door, “pretty much the only satirical Christian magazine in existence,” has a feature on Scientology. Only two of the articles are available online. For the rest, you’ll have to buy the magazine… But it appears that the folks at The Door have got the cult covered:

The Door has long been curious about Scientology, the quasi-religion started in the 1950s by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. But we noticed that people who look at the group too closely seem to get slapped with lawsuits and harassed to within an inch of their sanity.

Still, a religion based on an appliance–the E-Meter–(and one that could attract adherents like actors John Travolta and Tom Cruise) seemed worth a look-see. So for our July/August issue we bought some libel insurance, conferred with our jake-legged country lawyer Steve and got ourselves “prayed up” before we interviewed Terry Bezazian. She’s a former high-level Scientologist minister of defense who left the group after 30 years convinced its only purpose is to enrich an elite cadre of leaders. As she told contributing editor Bob Gersztyn, members are being bled dry by “a small Mafia within a large group of people that nobody knows about.”

Contributing editor Becky Garrison provides companion pieces: Least Known Teaching of Scientology and The Scientology Dictionary of Select Terms, where we learn about Xenu, Body Thetans, Level VII, clusters and DC-8s.

In addition, The Door’s investigators put together a list of selected quotes and information on founder L. Ron Hubbard in The L. Ron Hubbard Study Bible and Apologetics Handbook that reveals some of his more goofy theories and a disturbing background in Satanism. And it would be pretty funny… if it wasn’t all true.
