ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – When Atlantic City’s billion-dollar Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa opens this summer, its rooms will be missing one item.

The casino’s owners have barred the local chapter of Gideons International from placing copies of the Bible in its 2,002 rooms. It’s the first time an Atlantic City casino has established such a policy.

A casino spokesman says the decision was made because the casino expects to attract a diverse customer base.

The Bible Scriptures secretary for the Gideons’ Atlantic County chapter says he understands the casino’s stance. But he also believes the casino will eventually reverse its policy.

The group, based in Nashville, Tennessee, distributes more than a million free Bibles per week in 176 countries and 80 languages.
